New Directions in Graduate Education

In the 2016-2017 academic year, the Graduate School initiated a series titled New Directions in Graduate Education: The Graduate School’s Professional Development Seminar Series. The series is open to all University of Miami graduate students and highlights cross-cutting competencies that can strengthen the professional paths of graduate students.

In September, University of Miami President Julio Frenk launched the series with a thought-provoking session on Leading the Educational Revolution.  This helped frame the goals of graduate education and set a solid framework for the following sessions.

In November, Dr. Paula Chambers from The Versatile PhD, hosted a session on alternative career paths outside of academia with practical strategies for graduate students to prepare and search for diverse careers.

In March, two PhD consultants from Isaacson, Miller hosted a seminar about their journey from academic research to executive recruiting.  Graduate students learned how search consultants at Isaacson, Miller leverage their expertise to help recruit top leaders for mission-driven organizations, including colleges and universities, research institutes, academic medical centers, arts and cultural groups, conservation and environmental groups, and social justice and other national advocacy organizations.

The Professional Development Series for the 2016-2017 academic year will end in April with a session on Mentorship.
